I’ve had a great time in Ulaanbaatar, just soaking in the place and people. Head off south to the Gobi Desert tomorrow, not sure when I’ll next have internet but apparently the mobile service will be much better than what I’m used to at home.

Hello Chris, By the time you read this you would have experienced the infamous Mongolian roads. But the bad state of the roads is more than made up for by the people and the landscape. Over the last winter I read that the livestock losses were in the order of 15 to 20% due to the zudd (severe winter). This would be very tough on herders and their families, but the range may be getting a bit of a reprieve from heavy stocking pressures (assuming there has been good summer rains). I 2008 I went as far west as Ik Tamir Sum during a good season – livestock looked to be in good order and people reasonably happy with their lot. We were there for the local district Naadam and saw horse racing & wrestling – as we say in Australia, it’s not the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog – a few smaller wrestlers beat blokes much bigger than themselves.
